A comprehensive account of the recent architectural scene in Croatia, this book is an account of the highly productive decade of architectural experimentation in Croatia lodged between the violent break-up of Yugoslavia and their slow integration into the EU. Ivan Rupnik guides the reader through the emergence of this bizarre and fascinating architectural scene on the very edge of united Europe, utilizing Ljubo Karaman's theory of the periphery as a distinct space of artistic production from that of the center or province, Manfredo Tafuri's concept of architectural experimentation, as well contemporary notions of agency. Can an architect pass through walls? Can the city permeate a house? In The Dissolution of Buildings, architect Angelo Bucci presents projects in his native Sao Paulo and abroad. Advocating an architecture that is "the opposite of global action," his work responds to the topography of the city and to its urban environment. In a lecture delivered at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Bucci discusses work designed with his firm SPBR, projects that span from the scale of the house to the city. His built work is here accompanied by an excerpt from his doctoral dissertation, which explores how the devices available to architecture-and the sectional manipulation of groundplanes in particular-can mitigate some of the inequities and exclusions built in to the fabric of the contemporary city. Perceived as kind of ‘practicing school’ for various generations in Portugal, the practice evolved, in both theory and practice, with the idea that deliberate reflection on experience is essential to cultivate a developmental insight on architecture.

British architect, critic, historian and educator Kenneth Frampton is the third recipient of the Soane Medal, which is awarded annually in recognition of architects and critics who have made a major contribution to their field through practice, education, history or theory, and in doing so have furthered and enriched the public understanding of architecture. The lecture was delivered on 11 November 2019 at the Sheikh Zayed Theatre in the New Academic Building of the London School of Economics. Hartoonian also examines Gottfried Semper's discourse on the tectonic and the relationship between architecture and other crafts. The first volume in the Urgent Matters series, "Trojan Goat: A Self-Sufficient House "traces the design and construction of the University of Virginia's whimsically named, award-winning entry in the 2002 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon. John D. Quale, the architectural advisor and coordinator for the project, provides here a firsthand account of the creation of the 750 square-foot solar-powered house.

Aiming to make the remarkable achievements of the project better known, while highlighting potential future applications for the practice of architecture, Trojan Goat provides an exciting moment-to-moment documentary of the making of this environmentally friendly house. According to the received statistics, building use accounts for one-half of the total energy burnt each year in the United States, a greater amount by far than that consumed per annum by automobiles. Quale argues that, based on statistics such as these and the positive reception of Trojan Goat, there should be greater support for sustainable building practices in the United States, including an increase in design-build opportunities for students of architecture.

Set against the backdrop of global architectural production, the work of the Lebanese architect Nabil Gholam and his associates defies easy classification. On the one hand it can be regarded as a competent, modern, global practice for which the legendary SOM is still a model. Frank Lloyd Wright is not only synonymous with architecture, his name is also synonymous with the American house in the twentieth century. In particular, his residential work has been the subject of continuing interest and controversy. Wright's Fallingwater (1935), the seminal masterpiece perched over a waterfall deep in the Pennsylvania highlands, is perhaps the best-known private house in the history of the world. In fact, Wright's houses-from his Prairie style Robie House (1906) in Chicago, to the Storer (1923) and Freeman (1923) houses in Los Angeles, and Taliesen West (1937) in the Arizona desert-are all touchstones of modern architecture. For the first time, all 289 extant houses are shown here in exquisite color photographs.
